The Stay-Backer

Today when we were riding in the car, Marissa informed us that she had a new idea. "What is it," I asked. "The Stay-Backer," she said. "What is a Stay-Backer," I asked her. "Well, it's something you use when someone is doing something and they need people to stay back," Marissa explained patiently. "You put it up and make people stay back."

She went on to explain that she would make the Stay-Backer out of plastic and paper, probably painted blue or red with brown letters. I'm glad she's in charge, cuz it sounds like she's got the bases covered! She's ALWAYS thinking!!

Dance

Marissa loves to dance! Makes sense...she loves music and loves to move. Marissa is in a traditional Chinese dance class with seven other girls who are from China and have families just like hers. The hour we spend at dance class are a great blessing for both of us. Marissa bonds with other girls like her and learns Chinese music, dance, and language. I talk with other mothers - all about my age - all with daughters from China. In February the girls will all dance at the Nelson Art Gallery for Chinese New Year. Their teacher, Miss Lily is from China and was an established dancer there, and also traveled worldwide. She will also perform at the Nelson. I know the girls will love to see her dance! The girls have such great respect for Miss Lily, but for as much discipline as she gives them, she also shows them just as much love. She has danced her way into our hearts.

Birthday Bash

Okay...this post is a little late!! WARNING!!! I never wrote about Marissa's birthday on September 23. If you've never invited a dozen mostly four-year-olds to roller skate...you haven't lived. :) The girls had so much fun. Bright lights, loud music, all the popcorn you can eat, cupcakes, lemonade, skating, friends, and presents!! Of course, we had the princess party theme. Marissa is into anything princess. But, Mama wanted to bake a special castle cake and Marissa said no. She was concerned about getting it to the skating rink, so she requested cupcakes. She had very specific plans about what she wanted, and had planned this roller skating bash months before her birthday. With Daddy as her advocate, of course, this party was gonna happen!

Adoption

Adoption.

Only God knows where your next child will come from. You may have a biological child, or you may adopt. Adoption doesn't mean second-best. Adoption means another way to build your family.

International or domestic... Only God can guide you. Both places are birth places to incredible children. God's children. Waiting for their Forever Families... If you've ever thought about adoption...pray!!!

I can tell you from experience that I love all 3 of my kids the same!!!! Two are biological...one from China. If I felt God guiding me to adopt again, I would in an instant!!

Take a peek at the Kansas Children's Service League website at www.kcsl.org. You'll see some incredible kids waiting for homes. They are adoptable at virtually no cost. They're waiting for a chance to love...and be loved! If you don't feel led to adopt, then be an advocate and pray for these kids. They could use your help to find their families.

Brayden

I just realized today that Brandon and Dawn's son, little Brayden hasn't had his own post yet! He's such a special little guy, and just starting to develop his personality at five months old. He has such patience, for a baby! Such a sweet-natured little guy he is. Brandon says he has his mommy's temperament. We all hope he stays like he is...sweet, gentle, patient, and happy! He's also a big guy; almost as big as Marissa! Takes after his daddy and grandpa when they were little!

Our Story

Today when we were at Target, many people, as usual came up to tell me how pretty Marissa is. One Asian woman in particular commented several times and kept coming over close to look at Marissa. After a few minutes she came back and remarked again about how pretty she is then, she boldly asked if she is a "mixed race." She actually shocked me for a second, not that we haven't been asked the same thing before, but just with the way she asked it, and right in front of Marissa.

I told her we weren't sure, that Marissa was from China, however she lived very close to Viet Nam. The woman said "Well, then her dad must be Vietnamese," and she was gone. She of course, remarked again how pretty she is. I guess that makes any intrusive questioning worth it in her eyes. I usually gently correct people by using the appropriate verbiage such as "Birth Father," but I really don't think she would have understood, and she was gone too quickly anyway.

What bothered me is that Marissa is old enough to absorb and understand the questioning, so later at home (although she seemed fine at the store with the woman) I asked her in a quiet moment if she minded people asking questions about her and where she used to live and such. She thought a moment and told me that it didn't matter. I said, "It does matter if it bothers you. What do you think when people ask those questions?" She said it was okay. I said, "It is your story and we don't have to tell it if you don't want to." She said, "But, Mom. It's your story, too." Then she told me she loved me and showed me the hand sign for "I love you." I did the same and with her hand still making the sign, she made it hug mine. I love my precious little girl, but I told her that if she changes her mind and doesn't want people asking questions about her, that is okay with me. When she is ready to let people know that her story isn't their business, we will.
